I am Mama Kyna Clemons, creator of the Children of the Sun (COS) Classical African-Centered Curriculum and Co-Founder of the Children of the Sun Home School Intentional Community (Mpotam). I am also the Owner and Lead Textile Quilt Artist at Gyame Quilt Studio, where I create and teach the art of quilting and the rich history of the African and African American quilting the rich traditions. My husband, Baba G, and I have home educated our children in the Washington DMV area for twenty-five years. Education has always been a lifestyle for us with the principal goals of instilling in our children a life-long love for nature and the Creator; equipping them with the means to "acquire" knowledge, rather than merely filling their heads with facts to pass standardized tests; and teaching them "how to live" as opposed to simply "how to make a living.”
Children are born full of excitement, wonder, and adventure. It is our job to foster their creative genius and curiosity--writing, singing, dancing, building, baking, quilting, gaming, and traveling—there is no limit to how you can spend your time learning together. The world is our classroom!
In the midst of worldwide change and instability, parents and educators now have many innovative, hybrid learning modules from which to choose. Today's high-speed internet has made home education possible.
Student “PODS”, distance learning groups, and “tight-knit”, specialized learning communities are becoming the norm. Whatever your choice, you can have the FIRE--The Freedom in Real Education with the Children of the Sun Curriculum and affiliate resources—in today’s challenging educational environment. The most important thing is to enjoy the journey with your scholars!
